The first production Su-57 ‘Felon’, Russia’s 5th generation stealth fighter, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! during a test flight today. The pilot ejected and was recovered by a Mil-8 rescue chopper some 70 miles from the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (KnAAPO ). Russian media reports indicate that the accident was due to a failure of the flight control systems, though an exact cause will take some time to determine .

The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is Russia’s answer to the USAF’s F-22 ‘Raptor’, and has been in development since 2002. The type’s first flight was in 2010, and while combat trials have been flown over Syria, the Russian Air Force was expecting to introduce the fighter into regular service in 2020.

So, just how stealthy is that plane compared to the Raptor?

possibly not as good but close enough to be difficult for some radars to detect.

What I’m looking at is all of the enhanced capabilities built in, such as ridiculous vectored thrust systems, “raptor” manuver ability, etc. All of that ads weight and makes it less dogfight capable. The idea such manuvers are better are false, as they are last ditch manuvers and dump all energy into a final manuver leaving no energy for escaping or evading and make it a sitting duck afterwards.

Well I can see it right there.

Exactly. Terrible stealth.

Difficult to say for certain. The Raptor’s RCS is classified, but estimated to be somewhere around 0.0001 m² (RCS for an F-15 is about 25 m²), while the Felon’s is supposedly 0.1 to 1 m² (vs 15m² for a Su-27). Tricky bit is though, the F-22 is stealthy from all angles (though from the front is obviously lowest), while the Felon is really only stealthy from the front. Compare the two side by side and you can see that the Russian aircraft is less “finished” around the engines:

There’s also doubts about how well masked the IR signature is with those two giant nozzles.

The Su-5 7 has way sexier camo liveries - point goes to the Russians

The radar cross section of an F-22 is a hundredth of a millimeter square?

sure

Nowhere near.  They’ve as much as said they couldn’t achieve the stated goals there.

That’s just what THEY WANT YOU TO SEE.  The plane’s actually right behind you...
